Beta 1.8 is the version where the game started to look like what we know it as now. I got an illegal copy of Beta 1.8.1 from my friend towards the end of high school. Played that for months. Then one day I wondered why I couldn't find snow, went to the wiki, found out no snow biomes generated in Beta 1.8. But then I found out that there was potions, enchantments and a dragon added to the game, so I bought the game officially.
